Bethesda has unveiled the latest game in the Fallout series, and this one is an online-only survival game. The game is titled Fallout 76, a reference to Vault 76, one of the earliest bunkers to open its doors after the Great War of 2077.
Just like Grand Theft Auto, new Fallout games don’t come along often, so when they do, the hype is palpable. Fallout 76 appeared from nowhere, with Bethesda announcing the game on May 30. And now, thanks to E3 2018, we know more about Fallout 76.
Rebuilding a Post-Apocalyptic World
Fallout 76 is a prequel to the whole series so far, and takes place just 25 years after most of civilization was destroyed by nuclear armageddon. You play one of the survivors who steps out into the post-apocalyptic United States aiming to rebuild society.
You can play the game on your own, but the idea is to team up with other players to build bases, fend off enemies, and kill monsters. Think of Fallout 76 as Destiny, with players inhabiting a shared world, but playing in their own corner of that world.
Fallout 76 is primarily a survival game, albeit one where death isn’t the end. Instead, your character and progress will live on. Still, you’ll need to build a base and protect it from other players if you want to actually get anywhere in this game.
You can preorder Fallout 76 from June 15, and doing so will grant you access to the beta pencilled in for later this year. The final version of Fallout 76 is due to be released on November 14, 2018, just in time for the holidays.
Prepare Yourself for a Buggy Launch
Previous Fallout games have been absolute masterpieces, so hopes must be high for Fallout 76 to continue that trend. However, being online-only could make for a buggy launch, and it remains to be seen how fans will take to the other changes.
While you’re waiting for Fallout 76 to arrive in November, you may as well play the previous titles in the series. If you haven’t yet played Fallout Shelter you should give it a try, and if you revisit Fallout 4 you should check out these essential mods.
